The peony is both elegant and flamboyant. In Chinese culture and history, the peony has both the reputation of being “the king of flowers,” and of being “guo se tian xiang,” which means having incomparable colors and heavenly fragrance. Peony flowers are to be seen in pink, crimson, white, purple, yellow, purplish black, and other colors, and their rich fragrance overflows to fill the air. The image features a decorative window lattice frame surrounding a pink peony blossom, quietly elegant and warm, expressing the soft beauty of peonies. The meticulously detailed painting was designed and executed by Professor Chang Ker-chi.

Peonies are also known as “fu gui hua,” because the blooms symbolize wealth and dignity, as in the meaning of “hua kai fu gui,” the name of this series of medals. The image features these Chinese characters – “hua kai fu gui” – in the center, decorated with patterns of auspicious “ru yi” (a wand that has the power to grant wishes), and surrounded by patterns of ancient coins symbolizing wealth.
