The lotus, he hua or lian hua in Chinese, is in full bloom during the months of summer. The lotus is symbolic of auspiciousness, nobility, and holiness. While growing from the mud, the lotus is untarnished. The elegant fragrance of the lotus travels far, and the farther it drifts, the more delicate it smells. From its flowers, seeds and young leaves, to its rhizomes, the whole lotus plant is edible and usable. Its usages are marvelous and seemingly infinite. The image features a light pink lotus blossom with a little blue bird. Together these represent the quiet and gentle beauty of the lotus. The meticulously detailed painting was designed and executed by Professor Chang Ker-chi. |

The image features the Chinese characters hua kai fu gui (“blossom, wealth and prestige”) in the center, encircled by a pattern of auspicious ru yi (a wand that has the power to grant wishes). These, in turn, are encircled by pattern based on the shape of ancient coins to symbolize wealth. The overall design fully demonstrates the meaning of hua kai fu gui, the name of this series of medals. |
